Bare-Tool DEWALT DC515B 18-Volt Cordless 1/2 Gallon Wet/Dry Portable Vacuum (Tool Only, No Battery) Review

Bare-Tool DEWALT DC515B 18-Volt Cordless 1/2 Gallon Wet/Dry Portable Vacuum (Tool Only, No Battery)

Its a little noisy, but thats because it's actually doing something. If you already own 18 volt DeWalt tools, batteries, and a charger, then this is a really nice all-purpose tool to have around for a reasonable price. I haven't used it with any fluids yet, but it seems to have enough power to do that with no problem. The quick-change-quick-charge batteries are just as handy on this as they are on all of the other DeWalt tools. This won't do what a shop vac does, but it handles medium-small particles nicely. It doesn't come with any tools other than the detachable hose. The pictures are not always exceedingly clear, but the hose is normally stretched over the handle and anchored in the small yellow end which serves as the main vacuum nozzle. This "nozzle" is hard plastic with a fixed shape, but it seems to work well for most encounters. The detachable hose stretches out a few feet so it reaches about as far as an arm can reach, making it is handy, too. I think that this is worthy of the DeWalt name.

Milwaukee 8926 21 Gallon 1-1/3 Horsepower Blower Wet/Dry Vacuum Review

Milwaukee 8926 21 Gallon 1-1/3 Horsepower Blower Wet/Dry Vacuum
Average Reviews:

This is my 5th wet/dry vacuum. If you want a single-stage vacuum, it's hard to beat the Ridgid brand for price and perfromance. But if you want the Rolls Royce of wet/dry vacs, then you want a 3-stage Milwaukee! This is much more vac than a home owner or even a serious do-it-yourselfer would consider. But if your business is commercial or industrial cleaning, then this is your only choice. With 130" of static pressure, I have not found another vac that can match the Milwaukee for wet pick-up (like soaked carpeting or standing water on bare floors). And, of course, this picks-up anything dry that gets in the way. The array of heavy-duty attachments (for everything from automotive to boiler cleaning) and filters (sharps to very fine dust) makes the Milwaukee suitable for just about anything imaginable. This machine is Milwaukee throughout--if you break something on it it can be repaired, making this the last wet/dry vac that you will probably ever buy.
If you don't need a 21-gal vac, choose a smaller one--as long as you buy a 3-stage model.

Ryobi 18V One+ Wet/Dry Canister Vac P3200 Review

Ryobi 18V One+ Wet/Dry Canister Vac P3200
Average Reviews:

I was concerned when I got this because other reviews had said that it lacked power. While the other Ryobi One+ "dustbuster" vacuum is absolute garbage, this one is really great. While it's true that it doesn't have nearly as much power as my huge shop vac, it does a better than reasonable performance on most jobs you give it, and it sure is a heck of a lot lighter to cart around the house. I just used it to clean up the caked dust from a sheet of drywall I was cutting and it sucked it up with no problems whatsoever. I'm going to buy a 2nd one so I can keep one in the garage and one in the house... I love One+ tools!

Scunci 52069 Portable Cordless Wet Dry Vacuum Review

Scunci 52069 Portable Cordless Wet Dry Vacuum

I bought this on sale and I'm so glad that I didn't pay full price for it. I gave it two stars because it seems like it would be okay for cleaning up spills, but other than that it's pretty much useless. It may very well last for 30 minutes on a single charge but it starts to lose suction within 3-4 minutes. (It wouldn't be so bad if it were capable of running while plugged in. It isn't.) The attachments just make it worse, and the carpet attachment (the wide one) causes it to lose suction pretty much altogether. The filter is also next to impossible to clean...I have a stick vac with a similar filter that the dust just shakes off of. This one somehow manages to hold onto the dust, even when you try to scrape it off. Overall, a big disappointment.

Milwaukee 0780-20 28-Volt Cordless Wet/Dry Vacuum Review

Milwaukee 0780-20 28-Volt Cordless Wet/Dry Vacuum
Average Reviews:

First, it should be obvious that this is a bare tool. The batteries/charger cost more than the unit. Therefore, it is good if you have other V28 tools.
Next, somewhere someone commented that this is as powerful as a corded vac. It is not. A normal shop vac is around 1000W to 1500W, and it is unrealistic to expect this little portable guy with a 1-1/4" hose to have the same power. It just isn't as powerful.
But, it has a very usable power for my intended purpose, which is to say, it has enough power to clean up a small "mess" without having to lug out a real vac. I find I'm also using it for a surprising amount of small around the house/in the car cleaning/dusting since it is so conveniently portable. The cordless portability is the reason to buy.
A major compromise between power and battery life is that the battery (a big V28 mind you) only lasts maybe 5 minutes. This is enough for a small project clean-up, but don't expect it to clean up your shop. On the plus side, it uses 1-1/4" accessories which concentrate the available suction well and which are also the standard size for home vacuum cleaners. This item does not come with a dust brush attachment which I considered a necessity, but luckily I just bought one for a regular home vac.
The hose is VERY flexible which is nice. It accordians down to a small U-shaped unit which fits into a holder on the side when not in use. If I get a chance, I'll post a pic since this was one of my questions when purchasing it. It is fairly easy to carry in one hand and vacuum with the other.
I cannot quite give it 5 stars because I think it is still a bit overpriced, and some parts like the hinges, etc., seem a bit on the cheap side and clunky to use. I cannot comment on long-term durability yet. Hope this review helps you.

DEWALT DC515K 1/2 Gallon 18-Volt NiCd Cordless Wet/Dry Vac Review

DEWALT DC515K 1/2 Gallon 18-Volt NiCd Cordless Wet/Dry Vac
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this to replace a truly crappy Shark rechargeable vacuum. The DeWalt was one of four that I had decided on (the other three being the B&D PHV1800, Eureka 71A, and B&D CHV1500 in descending order of price). I ultimately chose the DeWalt because it uses a standard DeWalt power tool battery, has a washable filter, and was the only wet/dry vacuum of my selections.
The box contains the vacuum itself, rechargeable battery, fast charger (will charge a completely flat battery in about an hour), and a thin but complete owner's manual.
The DeWalt's design is all business. It's about the size of two irons or half a shoe box. The top has a very grippy rubberized handle that's set above a large (but not stiff) responsive power switch. It's very easy to turn the vacuum on and off with one hand and very difficult to do so accidentally. A plastic vacuum hose runs from the back of the unit over the top (the handle) to the vacuum nozzle on the front of the unit. You can easily pull the hose out of the nozzle to get into smaller crevices; put the hose back in and it's a normal hand vacuum. Underneath, in the back you've got a black plastic debris bin that's held in place with a beefy (but, again, not too stiff) latch. In front of that is the standard DeWalt battery pack.
Although it's one of the heavier vacuums out there, the weight is well balanced. You can easily tilt the vacuum in all directions without feeling like you're fighting the weight of the battery and/or the vacuum motor. You can vacuum vertical surfaces just as easily as horizontal ones. You CAN use the vacuum vertically if there's water in the collection bin; the bin seals tightly enough to the base that leakage isn't a problem. However, having too much water in there could make it splash into the motor assembly. So the moral is: If you've got water in the collection bin, empty it out before doing anything vertical (or hold the vacuum horizontal and use the detachable hose).
So, how well does it work? Quite well, in fact. The motor is very powerful and was able to easily pick up all manner of bits that I threw at it including drywall dust, small finishing nails, screw anchors, and cat hair from a wood floor. It also did an excellent job removing cat hair from upholstery despite its lack of a power brush or upholstery comb. In the car, it easily picked up all the sand, dirt, pebbles and occasional penny without any complaints, including bits that were embedded in a damp carpeted floor mat.
Emptying the bin is simplicity itself and takes less than five seconds to complete. The filter seems to be doing an excellent job so far; even with a bin full of drywall dust, there's no "cloud" when you turn the vacuum on again. I haven't yet needed to clean the filter but it's easily removable and is washable. (EDIT 03-24-08: I finally had to wash the filter. It lost about 70% of its suction after pulling up a buttload of spackle dust, so I removed and tapped the filter against the inside of a trash can. A HUGE cloud of dust was released. About a minute at the sink with a small stiff bristled scrub brush and the filter came clean. I let it dry overnight before reinstalling it; meanwhile I rinsed out the collection bin and cleaned up the unit itself. By morning it was back to its old self again, sucking up everything and scaring the cats.)
The battery lasts friggin' forever. Out of the box the battery had a partial charge on it that lasted about 20 minutes. After charging for about half an hour in the included charger I was able to vacuum pretty much every corner and edge in the house, plus my car, without losing any vacuum strength. A big selling point for me was that it uses standard DeWalt power tool batteries so finding replacements will be incredibly easy.
My only real issue with the vacuum is one that has been mentioned before: This vacuum is LOUD and does emit a power tool-like whine which some people can find annoying. I doubt it's any louder than my full-size vacuum cleaner but since it's held in your hand rather than being dragged on the floor, it's closer to your ears and therefore might sound louder. So far as 18v handheld vacuums I compared it against this one is about average in noise, and compared to all handheld vacuums I looked at this is definitely one of the louder ones. I therefore wouldn't consider this to be "bad design" but simply a consequence of a larger and more powerful motor. Even so, since there are other 18v handhelds out there which aren't as loud, I think DeWalt could have done a little something to quiet it down just a little more.
I also would have liked to have a transparent debris bin so that I could see how full it was. This feature exists on at least 2/3 of the handheld vacuums out there today. I recognize DeWalt's "yellow and black" design decision here probably overrode this as a possible feature.
The only other thing I would have liked to see on this vacuum is a few more accessories; namely, a shoulder strap (so you can walk around using the hose to clean things like window sills and such) and a few hose accessories like an upholstery brush or pinhole nozzle. Still, even with these minor shortcomings I'd definitely buy this one again.

I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting, but this wasn't it. If you're like me and wait until you actually HAVE dirt, crumbs, etc. in your car to clean, the power of this vac doesn't really do the job. It gets some of the crumbs and what not, but leaves behind a whole lot. The best way to use it is to pull out the little crevice nozzle, stick the carpet brush on there, and go back and forth over the same area about 5 times. Even then there are very visible crumbs and such left. To me, this vacuum just isn't worth it...If it's not going to get all the little debris and make your car look noticeably cleaner, then why even bother? It will do though, I suppose if you just want a quick tidy of the seats or something. If you are looking for a like-new clean, this is NOT the product for you. At least it wasn't too expansive.

Ridgid WD4522 4.5 Gallon Pro Pack Portable Wet/Dry Vacuum Review

Ridgid WD4522 4.5 Gallon Pro Pack Portable Wet/Dry Vacuum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is seriously one of the best tools I have purchased for my home in the last 10 years. I use it constantly for various tasks.
First, it is a heavy-duty wet/dry vacuum. That means you can easily vacuum up everything from crusted mud to broken glass to kid's art supplies without any worries. It has strong suction and a wide nozzle, so it seems to just pick up everything. When a glass breaks, I use this vacuum to get the little tiny shards that brooms always miss. The suction is so strong I something use it on my thick carpets instead of my conventional vacuum with rug-beater. It pulls things out from deep inside the fibers. I also use it to clean my car--it works better than those units at the gas station you have to feed constantly with quarters. I recently cleaned my computer with it. There are no small nozzles included, but I didn't need them. I opened the top of the computer, held the big nozzle about 6" above it, and all of the dust was sucked up easily.
As for wet operation, when my washing machine overflowed, I had water all over the floor. I merely opened the top, removed the filter, and I could then suck up the water easily off of the floor. When one of my kids vomited on the carpet, I used some Resolve Carpet Cleaner, water, a brush, and this vacuum to get it looking like new. There is a great flat-nozzle that works wonders to pull water out of thick carpeting.
The best part about the vacuum is the package. Sure--4.5 gallons is not a huge volume, but I frankly do not have room in my home for a 16-gallon wet/dry vacuum. For the rare time I need to vacuum water, I can take a few trips to the sink to empty the tub. The real genius of this vacuum is the square shape. Any other small wet-dry vacuum is normally still a round shape (just like their bigger brothers). Ridgid was genius to make this square. It fits easily on a shelf with other toolboxes. All of the attachments fit inside the lid securely. Nothing is dangling off the side attached to some clip. Once you put this away, everything stays put.
The filter does a great job of keeping the air clean as well. I have even vacuumed up dust from sheetrock. Just be sure to remove the filter before you vacuum up water, and clean the filter occasionally. I like to take it outside and chuck it against the concrete. That does the trick. About once a year, I use my conventional home bagged-vacuum cleaner to suck the finer dust out of the filter.
In short, I am not a contractor, and just needed a heavy-duty vacuum for the realities of life that did not take up my whole storage area. This genius device fit the bill perfectly (and even my wife knows how to use it). I highly recommend it.
