Prestone Driveway Heat
Pros:
- It works! Spread the pellets with your hands, a hand-crank grass-seed spreader or whatever, and you'll see quick results - IF it's not super cold outside. That is, ice melting (and subsequent evaporation) is quick when it's in the 30's or higher, but MUCH slower when it's in the lower 20's or below. It works ice over concrete, blacktop, synthetic decking, or wood.
Cons:
- The container's screw top is not factory sealed (no gasket), so the calcium chloride pellets start absorbing moisture in the air from the 1st day of packaging. As a result of this planned obsolescence by Prestone, if you don't use it the first season, it might have absorbed so much moisture from the air, that the entire contents can solidify. Once that happens, product effectiveness is diminished; however, if you crush the solid product into small particles, it may still work reasonably well.
- The container's stiff plastic is very thin; i.e., .014". That's only 1/72 of an inch, or equivalent to 3 sheets of 24 lb. paper. The plastic eventually darkens and becomes so brittle (after a couple of years), that it breaks apart on its own. On the plus side, the contents won't spill, since, by this time, it's one solid block.
Summary:
The pellets will last longer if you make your own foam gasket to fit the cap, as long as it seals the container.
